Finding Your Calm – Thai Chi

Tai Chi (often spelled Tai Chi Chuan) is a gentle, low-impact mind–body exercise that originated in ancient China as a martial art and evolved into a therapeutic movement practice. It involves slow, flowing sequences of movements coordinated with deep breathing and focused attention. Tai Chi emphasizes balance, posture, weight shifting, and controlled motor planning, making it especially beneficial for improving flexibility, muscular strength, coordination, and body awareness. The practice also supports relaxation and stress reduction by calming the nervous system and promoting mindfulness. Due to its adaptable pace and minimal physical strain, Tai Chi is widely used across age groups and clinical populations—including individuals with arthritis, neurological conditions, and developmental disabilities—to enhance physical function, emotional regulation, and overall well-being.
